I discovered Barking Irons around five years ago when I was living in NYC. I can't remember what store I found them in, but I instantly fell in love with the brand. The full name is Barking Irons on the Bowery and their collections revolve around various aspects of New York City history.
So what is a 'barking iron'?
From their Wikipedia page:
The name "Barking Irons" comes from a 19th century slang term for pistols. The term was created by gangs of youths that haunted New York's infamous Bowery. The Bowery, a theatre district for much of the century, was a critical proving ground for indigenous American culture in the 19th century. Uniquely American art forms such as tap-dancing, minstrel shows, and vaudeville theatre all gained popularity in the Bowery theatres of the time.
Ever since I saw Gangs of New York I've become more and more interested in NYC history, partly because my father's family came here from Ireland around the turn of the 19th century and partly because New York is just awesome. Barking Irons continues to fuel this interest.
In 2006 they began to design limited edition shirts for bands like Kings of Leon, Sean Lennon and PT Walkley.
Unfortunately they've taken down the collections from previous seasons, but you can still find prints on eBay.
